PCM (Engine Computer) Tuning with the Unichip PnP
The current day Multiport Electronically Controlled Fuel Injection System is made of electrical sensors which observe the engine conditions, the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) which operates the particular system dependent on signals from each of these sensors, and control actuators which operate under the control of the Engine Control Module (ECM).
The PCM (Powertrain Control Module) carries out activities such as fuel injection control, idle air control, and ignition timing control.
In addition, the ECM (aka The Blackbox) is equipped with a number of diagnostic test settings which usually simplify troubleshooting whenever a fault code develops.

spark ignition timing control
The ignition power transistor centrally located within the ignition main circuit pulse ON and OFF to manage the actual main current rate to the multi spark ignition coils. This method controls the spark timing so that it will offer the optimal ignition timing with regard to the engine performing conditions. The actual ignition timing is calculated by the Electronic Control Module as a result of engine speed, air flow, engine coolant temperature (ECT), together with atmospheric pressure.

The actual fuel injector drive periods as well as injection timing remain managed so that the the best possible air/fuel mixture is supplied to the engine to correspond to the continually-changing engine operation variables. A correctly sized fuel injector is positioned near the intake port of each cylinder. The regulated gasoline is then distributed to each one of the injectors. Sequential fuel injection is typically distributed one time for each cylinder per 2 revolutions of the engine. On a four cylindr engine the actual firing order is 1-3-4-2. Each cylinder has a dedicated gasoline injector. This is whats called multiport injection. The Electronic Control Module provides a richer air/fuel mixture by carrying out “open-loop” control when the engine is cold or operating under high load conditions in order to maintain engine performance.In addition, when the engine is under normal operating temperature after warming-up, the ECM manages the A/F (air to fuel ration) mixture utilizing the heated Lambda sensor signal to use “closed-loop” control. The closed-loop feedback defines the Stoichiometric Air-fuel mixture ratio at which the catalytic converter can perform the highest level clean-up efficiency.
With the Unichip (new Q-plus version) you really have total control over all these parameters in order to make changes to the timing and fuel maps. The Unichip (Q version) has 24 RPM sites between 100 RPM and 24000 RPM and 13 load sites between closed throttle full throttle position. This equates to 312 practical adjustments for each map. In turn the Unichip Q-plus will interpolate between each speed and load site sixteen times which provides you a decent resolution densed map.
